COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) A powerful image: the Earth with a face mask around it, all while being held by a latex glove. That's what one Columbus artist has interpreted from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jesse Cabungcal told ABC6/FOX28 that major events, like 9/11, have impacted him personally, as well as the country we live in. That's why the coronavirus outbreak moved him to create new art. "As an artist/photographer, I've always responded to many major events such as 911, etc., that affect me personally and the country we live in, and of course the world in general. The pandemic that the world is experiencing, Covid-19, truly brings the world to stand still, we are in serious crisis," said Cabungcal. That personal impact is what moved him to create his COVID-19 artwork. Cabungcal explains that the global crisis we're currently experiencing is what he wanted to show in his artwork. "Many lives are lost and many are affected in one form or another. I saw the world in crisis, and this image appeared in my head. As usual, I always use my creative gift to release how I'm feeling about such events. I started by acquiring a ball large enough to make a globe, started painting and added textures by pasting tissues on the surface, painted it to complete, acquired a mask and latex gloves that by the way was not easy to find with all the hoarding going on. I then brought it in the studio to acquire the needed mood on the shot, my lighting expertise is needed," said Cabungcal. As for the latex hand, Cabungcal said his creative rep Cecilia Buehler help with that. "So a hand holding the earth is needed, I had my Creative Rep, Cecilia Buehler, to put on the latex gloves and hold the globe on the set," said Cabungcal. As for Cabungcal's wish for Central Ohio during this pandemic, he said the following; Please take care of each other, be a giver, be thoughtful to your neighbors. Be considerate and remain healthy...we got this and just like everything else, it will pass. God bless us all!
